With the introduction of the R66, Robinson stayed close to its successful business formula of a low total cost of ownership. This approach worked well with the R22 and R44 piston based helicopters. With the R66, the company uses, for the first time, a turbine engine as its power source, and also enters the market of five seater helicopters, which Robinson believes is lacking a sound turbine-based solution.
Over 100 units have already been sold worldwide (2012). However, it is still far too early to assess if the R66 will turn out to be a relative commercial success.
