Description |
The story of the Auroa starts with the Ultrasport 496 helicopter in the experimental category, as sold by the American firm SportsCopter International. However, sales have not met expectations, probably due to the 95hp Hirth piston engine.
The New Zealand based company Auroa Helicopters acquired the Ultrasport 496 design and developed it into the Auroa. This machine uses the LAE Solar T62 turbine engine from LAE Helicopters (based in Cyprus, Europe), which also sells this engine for the original Ultrasport 496 helicopters as a retrofit.
The development is a joint effort by Auroa (engine) and LAE Helicopters (fuselage), with each company having the rights to sell the machine on their particular continent.
The Auroa has a carbon fibre fuselage, glass cockpit and will meet the FAR-27 requirements. It is sold in both kit form and ready-to-fly. At the time of writing (2013), the Auroa had not yet reached the production stage.
