1903 First Flying Aircraft Heavier Than Air (Wright Brothers)

The airplane uses a combustion engine, which has had a tremendous impact on aviation, with it's much better power to weight ratio than steam engines. It was the combustion engine that enabled the realisation of true flying helicopters by delivering the power required with an acceptable amount of additional weight.
